Not sure whether you will be able to cook comfortably during the trip? Have you wondered about what cooking inside a motorhome is like and if it is safe? This blog will explain how to cook, what the motorhome kitchen is like, and what to bring to make delicious meals.
One of the questions that come to mind before embarking on a road trip is how to cook in motorhomes. Although it seems like a difficult or impossible task, it is easier than you think.
You can find two types of kitchens in motorhomes:
- Portable gas stove
- Built-in gas stove
Below, you can see how built-in gas ovens work step-by-step
The first thing is to turn on the stove:
- Lift the hinged glass lid that covers the hob before lighting the rings.
- To light the hob, gently press and turn the control knobs to the position of the largest flame. Hold it down while pressing the power button.
- After the hob is lit, keep pressing the control knobs for a few seconds until the flame failure device deactivates.
- Adjust the flame as needed for cooking. To turn off the hob, turn the control knob until it is aligned with the indicator on the hob.
Easy, right? Using a built-in gas stove is like cooking in a normal kitchen, it’s just smaller, so take it easy and keep the kitchen tidy so it doesn’t become too stressful. Here are some tips for using the built-in gas stove.
- Before starting cooking, make sure there is gas and the gas valve on the gas cylinder is open.
- While cooking, always leave the window open to ventilate the vehicle. Bear in mind that the glass lid gets hot while cooking.
- Always keep the lid of the gas cooker open after cooking until the hob has cooled down. Otherwise, the glass plate could break, which is the last thing you want.
- Only use pots and pans whose diameter is suitable for the gas hobs.
- When the flame goes out, the thermocouple automatically cuts off the gas supply.
What not to do with built-in gas stove
- Don’t use the glass lid of the gas cooker as a hob.
- Don’t close the lid of the gas cooker while the gas cooker is still running. It seems obvious, but prevention is better than cure.
- Don’t put pressure on the gas cooker lid when it is closed.
- Don’t place hot cooking pots on top of the gas cooker lid.
Portable gas stove
This method is for the most adventurous who would like to have an authentic motorhome experience. How does it work?
- Place the portable stove on a completely flat surface to prevent it from tipping.
- Remove the pot holder from the top of the stove. Flip it over, so that the stand is facing up, ready for it to hold the pan.
- Open the lid of the stove cartridge. Remove the cap from the gas cylinder and gently place the gas cartridge on the stove.
- Hold it upright and push the cartridge stopper lever down until the gas canister snaps into place. Check that the gas cylinder has been correctly put in place before using it.
- Turn the control knob all the way to the left to the “on” position until the stove clicks and lights.
- Adjust the control knob to the size of flame you want.
- After cooking, turn the control knob to the “off” position and lift the cartridge lever to the unlocked position.
- Verify that the flame is out and allow it to cool completely before disconnecting the gas cartridge. Never leave the gas cartridge in the pot when not in use.
- Finally, put the red protective cap back on the gas cartridge when finished.
These are the steps to follow to safely light the portable stove. Just remember not to use pans or pots that are too big for the stove, as this will direct the heat down towards the gas cartridge. If using more than one portable stove, don’t place them too close together, as this can cause them to overheat.
