With a name meaning ‘mouth of the River Ness’, Inverness sits tucked into Scotland’s east coast where the river meets the Moray Firth. It has a commanding natural position at the northern end of the Great Glen. This puts it within easy reach of many of Scotland’s most impressive natural sites, easily reached with a campervan rental in Inverness, not the least of which is Loch Ness, from which the River Ness rises. The Cairngorms National Park is less than an hour’s drive, while Ben Nevis, the UK’s highest peak at 1,345 meters above sea level, lies temptingly on the horizon
Inverness lies approximately three hours north of Edinburgh along the A9, on the opposite side of the Cairngorms. From Inverness, the A9 then forms the western half of the much-celebrated North Coast 500 driving route.
Thirteen kilometres north of the city, Inverness Airport mostly receives domestic flights operated by British Airways and easyJet, which connect the city with London, Belfast and Dublin in around an hour. KLM also has flights direct from Amsterdam lasting 1.5 hours.
Inverness railway station has regular services to Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Perth in Scotland. The Highland Chieftain service connects it to London’s King’s Cross Station, while the Caledonian Sleeper night train terminates at London Euston.
There is a reasonable number of on-street parking spaces in the centre of Inverness. Those in front of Inverness railway station, at Raining’s Stairs off Charles Street, and on Kingsmill Road, all cost £2 per hour. There is also parking for motorhome rental in Inverness a few minutes further out on foot, Old Town Rose Street multi-storey car park has more than 800 spaces. It is open 24-7, and more suitable for long term parking, although the height limit is 2.03 meters.
